attention computer ppl

Will someone do my grunt work for me? 🙂 🙂 🙂

My poor little (actually, heavy and huge) Toshiba Satellite has been with me for over 2 years now. Its 1.4GHz P2 CPU and 128MB RAM need to be laid to rest.

Need a laptop to take to school pretty much every day. Budget’s around $1500 (tax included), the cheaper the better. If I could afford it I’d get the Sony VAIO S270P or the 14 inch iBook G4, but they are just a little out of my price range. In no hurry so still waiting for that perfect deal to come along.

Maybe I’m dreaming but here’s my preferred configuration:

CPU: P-M or centrino, the faster the better
Weight: 5-7 lbs, but hopefully less than 6
HD: 40GB (I guess I can always carry my iPod around as removable storage…)
RAM: 512MB
DVD ROM (can live without RWs, I barely use the ones I have at home)

My knowledge of hardware is limited so I’m definitely up for whatever advice you have on it.

Now here’s the important thing… I want a PRETTY one. 😛 If I gotta take it around with me and show it to everyone I don’t want to lug around an ugly Inspiron or something like that.

Anyway, back to work… (actually, back to my search for the perfect laptop :P)

have you tried cnet yet? I have entered your config. through their filter, and it spitted out 6 that fits your liking:

personally, I shop at outpost.com, b/c their retail store is in my neighborhood, so if anything goes wrong I can go yell at them in person. it’s something you might consider when you shop online.

    ok work is done. ::grunt::

  2. I’ve got a 12 inch G4 iBook I bought last year that’d I’d be willing to let go of pretty cheap, say $400 or so. Since I got my ugly Dell work laptop, it’s mostly gathering dust 🙂

It’s ummm, an 800 mHz g4, (about 2/3rds the speed of the current iBooks) 256M, 30GB HD, and I added a wireless g card (54 mbps) to it. It’s got a very annoying power supply that needs a lot of jiggling to get it to work, but I’ve pretty much mastered it at this point. You’d probably need to get a new one. The laptop itself is all of 5 lbs.

  3. dear lurker~hehe, thanks for lurking around… i go to fry’s for most of my computer stuff too… didn’t even know they had an online department -_-“”

alex~really? i’ve always wanted a mac, the only thing I’m worried about is not being able to use all my pirated software like macromedia and adobe suites (hmm… did i just confess to a crime?). i guess I can always keep my old toshiba at home and use ibook at school… if all else fails i still got 2 desktops 😛 (I feel like a computer nerd @_@)

  4. I am looking for “perfect laptop” too.
my brother just had one(http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?CategoryID=cat01174&id=1099384806399&skuId=6963958&type=product onsale after rebate p4 less $1000) , and that one is too heavry (almost 8lbs XD)for me.
If you don’t mind the laptop too ordinary, IBM’s is the good one.

Beside CNET, there are the results from Yahoo: http://shopping.yahoo.com/s:Notebooks:1520-Processor%20Class=Pentium%20M:browsename=Processor%20Class%20-%20Pentium%20M:1554-Installed%20Memory=1000.00_1500.00:1913-Hard%20Drive%20Capacity=40.00_40.00:keyword=notebook%20laptop%20computers:1088-Weight=5.00_5.99:refspaceid=14489115:squery=laptop:keyword=notebook%20laptop%20computers;_ylt=AnO2B98HKaHTHak..JZaq9J7jnUC;_ylu=X3oDMTBubmZxcnUyBF9zAzQxMjU4NjE5BHNlYwN3ZXN0bmF2?y=ggg&view=

  6. With your budget, I’d probably look at one of the HP nx7010 models (excellent design esp the keyboard layout and trackpad, fantastic screen, bluetooth and wi-fi, dual monitor support, etc). Just a really good package for the money.

I use a Fujitsu S7010 at work as well as on the road. It’s not the prettiest notebook around and has only a 14″ screen. But I really appreciate its form factor and light weight. It’s sort of my ideal notebook at the moment (apart from the Apple iBook – but then again the iBook won’t run the software I use for work!) I just thought you might also want to consider this model.

Now, btw, isn’t that _the_ Toshiba that you once so affectionately declared love to (that was my favourite blog entry of yours ^_^)?

  7. i like the fujitsu 355… but it’s kind of heavy 🙁
i like hp’s design, just never used one so wasn’t sure about the quality or anything…
on the other hand just saved $1200 off tuition for dropping one class and my parents are willing to pay me for my old laptop… hmmm… 😛
