In 1923 Hitler and his supporters attempted to take over the government in a failed coup now known as Bierhallputsch, resulting in the death of 15 of his followers. After he gained power, Hitler erected monuments in front of Munich’s Odeonsplatz to commemorate his fallen comrades and citizens are required to give the Nazi salute when they pass by. Some citizens avoided this requirement by quietly taking a turn down the small alley called Viscardigasse instead of walking along the main street, Feldherrnhalle. Today, this path has been painted gold as a tribute to those who protested in silence.
